◎Dark Horse Takes Glory in Women's Singles in Table Tennis
Peaking at just the right time, China's Huang Meng Ping emerged from nowhere with an incredible run over the past two days to edge past Japan's Ueda Moe 4-3 (6-11,9-11,13-11,11-7,11-9,9-11,12-10) in the title game for the Gold in Women's Table Tennis this evening.
A jam-packed crowd at the Taipei Arena was treated to one of the closest matches in recent years as Huang overcame an early 0-2 deficit by winning the next three sets and losing the sixth set by a close 9-11 margin before prevailing in a thrilling seventh to clinch the Gold. Failure to put the game away when it counted the most cost Ueda the Gold as she allowed Huang back into the game in a momentum-shifting third set that delivered a major boost of confidence to the Chinese. In the decisive seventh, both players traded leads smaller than four through the first 20 points in a classic seesaw affair before Huang finally pulled away with back-to-back points to nail the win.
